Bamboo Longboard

What is Bamboo Longboard

Bamboo longboards have become increasingly popular for their eco-friendly and sustainable nature, as well as their durability and flexibility. While Canadian maple wood was once the main material used for making longboards, there has been a shift towards using bamboo, composite materials, fiberglass, and carbon fiber.Bamboo is an ideal material for longboards because it is lightweight, strong, and flexible. Unlike traditional wood, bamboo is fast-growing and renewable, making it an environmentally friendly option for those who are conscious of their impact on the planet. Additionally, bamboo is less prone to warping or cracking, so bamboo longboards tend to have a longer lifespan than those made from other materials.

Benefits of Bamboo Longboard

Environmentally friendly
Bamboo is often the preferred material for professional skateboard makers. Not only is bamboo stronger and lighter, it also offers superior grip and stability. Many professional boards are made of bamboo. So, the question is: is bamboo better than maple? Weighed against maple, bamboo is definitely better. And if you're not sure what to choose, here are some advantages of bamboo skateboards over maple. You'll be glad you made the switch!As for environmental benefits, bamboo is more sustainable than maple. Maple takes seven to ten years to reach maturity, while bamboo only takes about five years. And while maple is a more durable material, it also takes a long time to grow back. This means that it requires more resources to replace than bamboo. However, it is possible to get maple from sustainably managed forests. Fortunately, there are many advantages to buying bamboo skateboards.

Stronger
Despite the fact that maple skateboards are still common, professional boards are increasingly being made from bamboo. Not only is the material stronger and lighter, but professional boards made from bamboo are more durable than their maple counterparts. Bamboo skateboards are a great choice for beginners and professionals alike, because it provides both the strength and weight advantages of traditional wood. But why is bamboo so popular? Let's find out.The first advantage of bamboo skateboards is their lighter weight. Compared to maple longboards, bamboo longboards are easier to maneuver and allow the rider to hit high speeds with minimal effort. Meanwhile, maple longboards are heavy and require more muscle power to propel. However, maple boards are more durable than bamboo skateboards, which means that they can handle heavy abuse. This advantage is particularly important if you plan to use your longboard on a regular basis.

Lighter
Professional boards are often made of lighter bamboo than wood. The reason for this is simple: bamboo is stronger and lighter than wood. You might be wondering if the same material is suitable for skateboards. The answer is yes, bamboo is an excellent skateboard material, and it's becoming increasingly popular with skaters around the world. Keep reading to find out how bamboo skateboards compare to traditional wood models. But before you make the switch, here are some tips.

Types of Bamboo Longboard

Cruising Longboards

Cruising longboards are designed for casual riding and transportation. They are typically longer and wider, providing a stable platform that's easy to balance on. These boards are perfect for riding around town, commuting, or just enjoying a smooth ride on flat surfaces.

Carving Longboards

Carving longboards are built for making tight turns and smooth, flowing rides. They feature flexible decks and responsive trucks that allow for deep, sweeping turns, similar to the sensation of surfing or snowboarding. Carving boards are great for riders who enjoy maneuverability and fluid motion.

Downhill Longboards

Downhill longboards are made for speed. These boards are usually longer, stiffer, and have a lower center of gravity to enhance stability at high velocities. They often feature a drop-through or top-mount design to keep the rider closer to the ground. Downhill boards are best suited for experienced riders who enjoy racing down steep hills.

Freeride Longboards

Freeride longboards are versatile and cater to a mix of downhill and trick riding. They are designed to handle slides, spins, and other tricks while maintaining stability. Freeride boards often have symmetrical shapes and kicktails to aid in performing stunts. These boards are ideal for riders looking to explore both speed and tricks.

Application of Bamboo Longboard

Commuting

Due to their compact size and maneuverability, cruisers are perfect for short-to-medium distance commutes, such as navigating through urban environments, college campuses, or local parks. Their soft wheels absorb vibrations from uneven surfaces, providing a smooth and comfortable ride;

Carving

The responsive nature of cruiser skateboards makes them ideal for carving, which involves leaning into turns to create a fluid, surfing-like motion. This type of riding requires a board with good grip and flex, and cruisers fit the bill perfectly;

Cruising

As the name suggests, cruiser skateboards are designed for leisurely rides and exploring the neighborhood at a relaxed pace. Their stability and ease of control make them perfect for riders of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned skateboarders;

Mild Downhill

While cruiser boards are not designed for high-speed downhill racing like longboards, they can handle gentle downhill slopes with ease. The rider should be cautious and aware of their board's limitations to avoid accidents;

Bamboo Longboard Components

01/

Deck
Mostly made of 7-ply Canadian (maple) wood. The front part is the Nose, and the back part is the Tail. The material and manufacturing technology can be the classic skateboard material, seven (or nine) maple boards, but it is also common to find bamboo boards, which are more flexible. Some are reinforced with layers of fiberglass, to support more weight and protect it from shocks.

02/

Trucks
Trucks are two and, they are attached to the sides of the board, but not at the end. Most of them are made of aluminum. Their function is to connect the wheels to the board (by means of 8 bolts and 4 nuts), and they are used to make the turns. This requires several components: The main one is the Kingpin or lead Hardware is a 1/2 12.5 mm iron "stud" where the two rubbers are coupled and passes through a hole in the axle to be able to tighten it with the nuts.

03/

Bearings
Each board has 8 bearings, which means that there are 2 for each wheel. They are metal rings with 6, 7, or 8 balls inside protected by two thin discs. They are usually made of aluminum. Between each bearing, there is a spacer that covers the distance from one to the other so as not to lose speed and prevent the wheel from wearing evenly.

04/

Wheels
There are 4 and they go on the ends of the axles. Made of urethane. They can be classified according to their size and hardness:56 mm to 60 mm: Used for street skateboarding, skate parks, bowls, pots, vertical ramps, and larger skaters.60 mm or larger: Used for longboarding, riding on slopes, or dirt roads.

05/

Griptape
To begin with, it is the element that is attached to the board and whose purpose is to give you the proper grip when you ride your board. Otherwise, your shoes would slip, causing you to fall or the lack of momentum needed to do various tricks if that's what you're looking for. It is important to take this into account when riding your longboard, according to your tastes and needs. Anyway, it is good that you know more about the materials, durability, and other characteristics to be able to make a good choice.

06/

Riser Pad
Riser pads are those rectangular plastic pads that are sometimes placed between the axles and the board, which raise the board a few millimeters and raise the center of gravity a little. They serve to cushion and protect the wood against impacts, help to minimize vibrations, and prevent the wheels from touching the board.

How to Choose Bamboo Longboard

Environmentally friendly
Choosing environmentally friendly bamboo longboards is a good choice, especially if you're looking for a skateboard that's lightweight, durable, and flexible. Bamboo is also a better option than maple, since it's more sustainable and environmentally friendly.Bamboo longboards are made from an organic, sustainable material that is harvested without harming the root of the plant. Process of Bamboo Longboard

Cutting
The first step in making a skateboard deck is to cut the big maple veneer planks to the same size;

Gluing
Once the veneer has been cut, the seven layers are glued together using a water-based adhesive;

Stacking
The layers are stacked on top of each other, with the grain of each layer running in a different direction. This helps to add strength and stability to the deck;

Pressing the Deck
After the veneer has been glued, the deck is placed in a hydraulic press. The press applies pressure to the deck, compressing the layers of maple veneer and shaping the deck into the desired shape. The pressure and temperature used do matter, as they will ensure that the layers are firmly bonded together;

Shaping
The next step in manufacturing a skateboard deck is to cut and shape the wood. This is normally done using a CNC machine, which uses computer-aided design (CAD) software to cut and shape the wood with high precision;

Fine Sanding
The deck edges are then sanded down to remove any rough spots or edges;

Sealing
The deck is then coated with a lacquer/sealant or other protective finish to bring the wood colors out;

Finishing
The final step is to add graphics and finishes to the Bamboo Longboard. This is typically done using screen printing or heat press methods, allowing high-quality graphics to be added to the deck. Skateboard decks can also be customized using various techniques, such as laser etching, embossing, and engraving. Some manufacturers also offer custom graphics and finishes for their decks;

How to Maintain Bamboo Longboard

Check the Wheels
Examine your longboard wheels for signs of wear, flat spots, or chunking. If your wheels have any of these issues or are extremely worn, it's time to replace them.

Inspect the Bearings
Remove the wheels from the trucks and inspect the bearings. If they are dirty or clogged with debris, you can clean them using a bearing cleaner or by removing the shields and cleaning them individually. After cleaning, add a few drops of skateboard bearing lubricant to keep them running smoothly.

Check the Trucks
Inspect your trucks for any signs of damage or wear. Pay attention to the pivot cup (the rubber or urethane part that holds the hanger in place) and the bushings. If any of these components are damaged, consider replacing them.

Tighten or Replace Grip Tape
If your grip tape is peeling or has become less grippy, you can either re-adhere it or replace it with new grip tape. A razor blade or utility knife can help you trim the edges neatly.

Lubricate the Pivot Cup and Kingpin
Apply a small amount of skateboard lubricant to the pivot cup and kingpin of each truck. This will ensure smoother turns and prevent squeaking.

Adjust Your Trucks (Optional)
Depending on your riding style, you may want to fine-tune your trucks' tightness or looseness. Adjust the kingpin nut to achieve your desired level of responsiveness.

Test Your Longboard
After performing maintenance, take your longboard for a test ride. Check for any unusual noises or handling issues. Make any necessary adjustments based on your ride experience.

FAQ

Q: Are bamboo longboards durable?

A: Bamboo is a sustainable material choice that helps to produce better boards. Skateboards made of bamboo are more durable, lighter, and stronger than maple decks.Kick tail longboard shapes are great for cruiser boards for last-second pedestrian dodges and curb hops, and a necessity on many freestyle boards.

Q: Is bamboo or maple better for longboards?

A: Bamboo is a bit more flexible than maple and is wonderfully lightweight, making it ideal for both riding and carrying. Bamboo boards are perfect for carving, cruising the streets, and transportation.

Q: Are bamboo skateboards better?

A: Bamboo prevents soil erosion, requires no toxic fertilizers, and is lighter and stronger than steel itself! All Bamboo skateboards and longboards are harvested from managed farms. Bamboo is a type of grass: cut it down and it grows back stronger than before.

Q: What is the most stable type of longboard?

A: Double drop longboards
Double drop longboards are a blend of drop through and drop down styles (so the deck drops and the trucks are mounted on top of the deck). They're the lowest, most stable deck style in existence, but they're extremely difficult to make, and as a result, very expensive.

Q: Are bamboo cutting boards good or bad?

A: Bamboo is denser and less likely to absorb bacteria than even high-quality hardwood, and its surface fights off bacteria (while plastic is a haven for microbes). So it's clear: bamboo is the healthiest cutting board to use.

Q: Why does my longboard wobble at high speeds?

A: A common one being loose trucks. Loose trucks can give you too much turning ability, making your set up hyper-responsive for any speed over 10-20mph. If you're going faster than that, then you just might want to tighten your trucks. How much is dependent on how fast you would like to go and what bushings you're riding.

Q: Should a longboard be stiff or flex?

A: Longboards come in many shapes, concaves, and flexes. The stiffer the board, the more stable it'll be at higher speeds. A flexier board might be fun at lower speeds, but that flex will likely knock you off balance at those higher speeds, or if you're a beginner unused to flex.

Q: Can skateboard be made from bamboo?

A: Bamboo is a sustainable material choice that helps to produce better boards. Skateboards made of bamboo are more durable, lighter, and stronger than maple decks.

Q: Is bamboo good for longboards?

A: Bamboo longboards (or boards made of bamboo wood) are the perfect longboards for you if you want a greater flex. You will often see bamboo longboards as a cruiser deck or as a carver. Sometimes it is mixed with other materials to make it a lot stronger such as fiberglass.

Q: Are Bigger wheels better for longboarding?

A: There is, however, more to it for us longboarders… The main difference you will notice between bigger and smaller wheels is that you can roll much faster over rough surfaces when you are on bigger wheels, and a few mm can make all the difference.

Q: Does carving on a longboard slow you down?

A: You can also carve at very high speeds to slow down a little bit before footbraking or sliding into a corner – it can go hand in hand with airbraking to scrub a bit of speed off. The key to carving is sliding your wheels slightly in each turn, which slows you down a little and keeps things under control.

Q: What is a good longboard length for beginners?

A: Your beginner longboard surfboard should be around 9'4" for the length and 23" for the width. If you're a bigger surfer, you can go up to 23 ½ inches wide. If you're a smaller surfer, you can go down to 22 ½ inches wide.

Q: Is it easier to ride a cruiser or a longboard?

A: More challenging. Just like longboards, cruiser boards aren't designed for doing tricks at the skatepark like a traditional skateboard. They're best enjoyed on city streets and flat roads. Because of their smaller size, cruiser boards are a bit harder for beginners to use.

Q: How to stop longboard downhill?

A: Drop Foot. The most accessible way to brake is to put your back foot on the ground and press it down to slow your longboard. This is an effective way to reduce your speed and/or stop completely. The Drop Foot is a simple way to manage your speed.

Q: Why is my longboard clicking when I turn?

A: Clicking most often comes from one of the washers on the kingpin moving around when it's not supposed to. Most commonly, the problem comes from the roadside (top) washer sticking to and releasing from the kingpin nut (like tectonic plates).

Q: What longboard shape is best for cruising?

A: All in all, drop throughs are the best all-around style of longboard for general hill bombing, sliding, and cruising all-in-one. They're also more forgiving than the more aggressive drop down board (see below) because they have great carving ability, but avoid letting you take too much speed into a turn.

Q: Should you rotate longboard wheels?

A: Grinding the wheels against pavement isn't necessarily the best thing to do to your wheels, but it is expected after multiple sessions of sliding. Rotating your wheels is one of the best ways to increase the life of your wheels.Longer boards (or those with longer wheelbases) will generally provide more stability at speed, but cannot turn as fast or as tight as boards with shorter wheelbases.

Q: How much should a good quality skateboard cost?

A: A good complete will typically range between $100 and $200 depending on type (street or cruise) and brand. Your can find cheaper if you go to Walmart or the like, but those are basically toy boards and won't do you or your child any justice. Go to a shop or order online if you don't have a local shop.

Q: What is the easiest skateboard to use?

A: Longboards are a popular choice for beginners because they are the easiest to ride from day one. Drop through boards are even more friendly to beginners because they lower the ride height for extra stability and easier pushing.

Q: Ebamboo skateboards better?

A: Bamboo prevents soil erosion, requires no toxic fertilizers, and is lighter and stronger than steel itself! All Bamboo skateboards and longboards are harvested from managed farms. Bamboo is a type of grass: cut it down and it grows back stronger than before.
