Benefits of Freestyle Longboard

Improve Balance

Balance is important for every activity, even walking. And sometimes, you may not even notice that you need to improve it. However, bettering your balance can help you improve all physical aspects of your lifestyle. Longboarding requires a stronger sense of balance because manipulating a board while moving could become challenging without proper balance and core strength. There are various exercises that you can practice daily to improve your balance progressively. You can start by standing on one leg with the other leg bent and raising your arms to your sides; this will center the equilibrium and strengthen your legs.

Relieve Stress

Like other physical activities, longboarding will help your body relieve stress and dispose of toxins through sweat. You'll feel less stressed because exercising causes the release of happy hormones, such as endorphins. This outdoor activity will also connect you with nature, naturally relaxing you and allowing you to increase your quality of life.Modern society is full of stressful situations, and exercising is something you can always rely on to provide an escape. Plus, you can rely on longboarding to offer you a fun commute and allow you to avoid traffic.Traffic is a problem that most cities must deal with, but you can avoid it when you opt for longboarding. This reduces the stress caused by traffic. Relieving stress will help you sleep better, reduce mood swings, and improve blood and oxygen circulation, so it's important to do your part in preventing these anxious feelings.

Stay Fit

Longboarding is a versatile and complete activity. With only 30 minutes of practice a day, you will get your daily exercise and endorphins boost. This will help you stay fit while having fun.Starting a new activity might be challenging, especially if you haven't mastered it yet. However, taking the time to stay fit and practice will help you quickly achieve your short and long-term goals. The first thing you need is the right equipment, and Madrid boards are the best option if you want reliable progress.Practice, consistency, and repetitive exercises will naturally improve your physic, but, most importantly, they will also keep you fit. This can help you have a better quality of life.

Improve Strength

Strength is one of the main health benefits of longboarding because, like balance, it will help your body get through daily activities. Your body relies on strength to prevent injuries, which will minimize accidents and visits to the doctor. The best way to exercise and become stronger is by having fun, and longboarding is perfect for that. You can choose different styles to meet your needs and deliver better results. Downhill longboarding and freestyling are some of the main activities that will improve your body's strength and capacities.

Types of Freestyle Longboard

01/

Drop Through Longboards
A drop through longboard has its truck mounts mounted through the deck of the board. This lowers the board closer to the ground, which increases stability. For this reason, drop through longboards are great for downhill longboarding.

02/

Downhill Longboards
Downhill longboards are used for riding at high speeds down hills. These boards are stable and fast. Most downhill longboards are drop through because this type of truck mount is most stable.

03/

Freeride Longboards
Freeride longboards are usually very similar to downhill longboards. Because freeride longboarding is done at high speeds, the best decks tend to be drop through. The main difference between the two styles are that freerider perform tricks and slides.

04/

Kicktail Longboards
A kicktail longboard contains a lip angled upward at the rear end of the board. A kicktail allows for foot placement that is beneficial for tricks and jumps. Most kicktail longboards are on the shorter side, between 30" to 35". Kicktail longboards are best for cruising and park riding.

05/

Top Mount Longboards
A top mount longboard is any longboard with trucks mounted directly underneath the deck of the board. Top mount longboards have better turn capability so carving is much easier. Top mounts tend to be less stable, however.

06/

Carving Longboards
Carving longboards makes you feel like you are surfing or snowboarding. Carving longboards can be either top mount or drop through. They use wheel cutouts or wheel wells to avoid wheelbite. Most carving longboards have a shorter wheelbase in order to allow for responsive turns. Carvers can be extremely fun on a slight incline.

Four Differences Between a Freestyle Longboard and a Skateboard

Shape and Size
If you put a longboard and skateboard side by side, you'll notice how flat the nose and tail of the longboard are. On a skateboard, you'll see more of a curve on its nose and tail to make it easier to land tricks and flips. It should be no surprise that longboards are, of course, longer. They can be as long as 59 inches, while the typical skateboard is around 36 inches. Here's where it gets confusing: longboards also come in sizes as small as 28 inches long. If the length trips you up, just remember the key difference between the two is that longboards are flat and skateboards curve. So, if you see a flat, shorter board, it's probably just a short longboard.

Deck Flexibility
For any new skaters out there, the deck is the base of your board. If your goal is to learn new tricks, you want your board to be thinner, meaning it'll have flex. The flex of your board is the stiffness of it. You don't want the flex to be too soft unless you're engaging in mellow cruising. For tricks, you want your flexibility to be either soft or medium, which gives you some stability and a spring-like feel to make jumps easier to nail.

Trucks and Wheels
Obviously, both skateboards and longboards have wheels attached, but the base that's attaching them is called the truck. It looks and operates differently for both boards. On a skateboard, the trucks are rigid and narrower, making it easier to grind and land tricks of your choice. They're also the same size as the maximum width of the skateboard's deck.Longboards have a more flexible truck to give you a smoother ride, which is perfect for longboarders who want to cruise for long distances or race downhill. Longboards also hold wider trucks that usually measure around 150 millimeters to 180 millimeters.

Balance
If your goal is to learn and master new tricks but you've never stepped foot on a skateboard, try a longboard first. Since they're larger and more stable, they're easier to balance on. Once you get more confident on a longboard, transition to a skateboard, and teach yourself how to balance better on a smaller board.

How to Choose Freestyle Longboard

Deck Shape and Length

The shape and length of the deck play a crucial role in the board's performance. Longer decks (40 inches and above) provide more stability and are better for cruising and downhill riding. Shorter decks (34-40 inches) offer more maneuverability, making them suitable for carving and freestyle. Deck shapes, such as pintail, drop-through, and symmetrical, affect the board's turning radius and overall feel.

Flexibility

Deck flexibility varies from stiff to highly flexible. Stiffer decks offer more stability at high speeds, making them ideal for downhill riding. Flexible decks absorb shocks and provide a more comfortable ride, which is great for cruising and carving. The right amount of flex depends on your weight, riding style, and personal preference.

Truck Configuration

Trucks are the metal T-shaped pieces that connect the wheels to the deck. The configuration of the trucks affects the board's turning ability and stability. Reverse kingpin trucks are common in longboards, offering better maneuverability and carving potential. Standard kingpin trucks are more stable and suitable for downhill riding. The width of the trucks should match the width of your deck for optimal performance.

Wheel Size and Hardness

Longboard wheels come in various sizes and hardness levels. Larger wheels (70-75mm) roll faster and handle rough surfaces better, making them suitable for cruising and downhill. Smaller wheels (65-70mm) are more responsive and better for tricks and freestyle. Wheel hardness is measured in durometers (A scale); softer wheels (78A-87A) provide better grip and shock absorption, while harder wheels (88A-101A) offer more slide potential.

Bearings

Bearings affect the smoothness and speed of your ride. High-quality bearings reduce friction and increase the board's speed. Look for bearings rated by the ABEC scale, with higher numbers indicating better precision and performance. However, the ABEC rating is not the only factor; brand reputation and material quality are also important.

Budget

Longboards come in a range of prices, from budget-friendly options to high-end models. Determine your budget and find a board that offers the best value for your money. Investing in a higher-quality board can provide better performance and durability.

How to Maintain Freestyle Longboard

Inspect It Regularly

By regularly inspecting your longboard, you can catch issues early on and remedy them before they get worse. During an inspection, check the deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, bolts, and grip tape for cracks or other signs of damage. If you notice a damaged part, repair or replace it immediately.

Keep It Clean

Your longboard can pick up grime from your shoes and the surrounding environment. To prevent rust, scratches, and other issues caused by dirt and debris, you should clean your board frequently. You can use a nylon brush, water, and soap to clean your board's grip tape, a damp sponge to rinse it, and a soft towel to dry it. To clean the bearings, remove them from the wheels, soak them in a solvent or alcohol, and then dry them with a hair dryer set to high.

Store It Appropriately

Step three in our five-step easy-to-follow longboard maintenance checklist is to store your longboard in appropriate conditions. When you're not using your longboard, you should store it in a cool, dry place-preferably inside your home.

Lubricate Its Bearings

In the center of your long board's wheels, there are small metal parts that spin as you skate. These parts are the bearings, and you must occasionally lubricate them using a light oil to keep them running smoothly.Lubricating the bearings is easy; remove the wheels, wipe the bearings clean with a rag, then apply a few drops of oil to each bearing and rub it in using your fingers.

Replace Its Wheels

Your longboard's wheels will wear down with time and use. If there are noticeable flat marks on the wheels, or if your longboard vibrates during skating sessions, you should remove the current wheels and replace them with new ones.

5 Simple Steps To Start Freestyle Longboard

Step 1: Getting your first longboard
As a longboard beginner, your goal is to have your longboard feel like an extension of yourself over time. This means you have to get comfortable with it. If you pick the wrong longboard in the beginning, this can really disrupt your progress. And it can be a costly mistake to fix, considering longboards are incredibly expensive in Singapore. To start, you can research the different styles of longboarding first. Longboarding is a sport that has branched into many unique styles, such as freestyle, dancing, downhill, and freeriding. Depending on which style you'd like to explore eventually, you'll need the relevant kind of longboard.

Step 2: Finding a buddy or a group of friends to skate with
Skating alone can be therapeutic, but skating with someone else can really push you to improve much faster. The longboard community in Singapore is extremely inclusive, and they host regular meetups (which depends largely on the Covid-19 situation now). Skating with a community can also allow you to engage the more experienced skaters - I'm sure they're more than willing to give you some tips to improve your style. After all, we've all started somewhere. In one of our recent blogs, we started our Meet The Community series, where we find out more about Singapore's longboard community. We recently interviewed a few talented and friendly individuals from our very own DockSession. Check out the interview to learn more about them and how to join them for their sessions.

Step 3: Finding a spot to practice
You'll also need a spot that's convenient for you to practice your riding. Ideally, your riding spots should have flat and smooth ground, and not anywhere that's near dangerous sites or residential areas (we don't want your neighbours complaining!).To make your life easier, here's a list of areas to longboard in Singapore which we've compiled. Feel free to save them on your Google Maps so you can visit them whenever you're in the area!

Step 4: Learning the basics
Now that you've gotten your longboard, found some friends, and a spot to practice, you're ready to get onto your board for the very first time. As we've mentioned earlier, longboard beginners should focus solely on getting comfortable with their board. The foundational steps are a prerequisite to exploring any styles in longboarding, no matter how simple they may be.

Step 5: Fail, Diagnose, Improve, Repeat
As with every learning process, you're gonna face difficulties in your longboarding journey. You'll fall, get hurt, and feel frustrated with your progress. But never forget that this is all part of the bigger picture, which is to become a better longboarder over time. With every failure, you have to diagnose why you didn't land that trick. Find the reason, create a solution, and improve your style from there.Once isn't enough. You have to repeat this process every time you skate and soon before you know it, you'd have made tremendous improvements.

FAQ

Q: How do I know what kind of longboard to get?

A: The board you choose will be influenced mostly by the typical conditions you ride, but also by your height, weight and preferred style of surfing. You don't want your longboarding to be held back by investing in equipment that simply doesn't suit the waves you ride .

Q: What is the difference between freeride and freestyle longboards?

A: A good freestyle deck has at least a kicktail, smaller deck and harder wheels. Freeride is a form of downhill longboarding in style, but is more trick oriented and more technical and the rider carves and slides to control speed when going down.

Q: What longboard shape is best for cruising?

A: All in all, drop throughs are the best all-around style of longboard for general hill bombing, sliding, and cruising all-in-one. They're also more forgiving than the more aggressive drop down board (see below) because they have great carving ability, but avoid letting you take too much speed into a turn.

Q: Should a longboard be stiff or flex?

A: Longboards come in many shapes, concaves, and flexes. The stiffer the board, the more stable it'll be at higher speeds. A flexier board might be fun at lower speeds, but that flex will likely knock you off balance at those higher speeds, or if you're a beginner unused to flex.

Q: What is the easiest type of longboard to learn?

A: Drop-through longboards
Drop-through longboards are functionally the best for beginners. They are super-low to the ground, which makes them easy to push, footbrake and slide. Drop-through longboards are a great place to start longboarding, as they make it easy to learn all the basics of longboarding.

Q: What are freestyle boards good for?

A: A freestyle board is meant to be in the snowboard park, half pipe, catching air or doing tricks across the mountain. These also can be used as urban boards and are designed for quick maneuvering while you're doing tricks.

Q: Can you dance on a freestyle longboard?

A: A longboard for freestyle and dancing typically ranges between 42 inches to 46 inches. Depending on your riding style, your longboard length can vary quite drastically from.

Q: Does the shape of a longboard matter?

A: The kicktail longboard gives the rider more utility. It features a low grade of concave and a kicktail to give riders more control when riding. It is easier to kick up the board without having to bend over.

Q: Is it easier to ride a cruiser or a longboard?

A: More challenging. Just like longboards, cruiser boards aren't designed for doing tricks at the skatepark like a traditional skateboard. They're best enjoyed on city streets and flat roads. Because of their smaller size, cruiser boards are a bit harder for beginners to use.

Q: What size longboard is easiest to ride?

A: Your beginner longboard surfboard should be around 9'4" for the length and 23" for the width. If you're a bigger surfer, you can go up to 23 ½ inches wide. If you're a smaller surfer, you can go down to 22 ½ inches wide. Furthermore, your beginner longboard should be around 15-17 pounds in weight.

Q: What is the easiest longboard to balance on?

A: Wondering what the easiest type of longboard is to learn on? Drop-throughs, kicktails, and drop-downs are beginner-friendly longboard shapes. A drop-through longboard is when the trucks are installed through the deck. This provides a lower center of gravity, making them easier to balance and push on.

Q: What are pintail longboards good for?

A: Pintail longboards are highly manoeuvrable due to their narrow waist and pointed ends. This makes them perfect for cruising and carving on flat surfaces and mild hills. You can easily change direction and make smooth turns with a pintail longboard.

Q: What is the difference between a pintail and a drop down longboard?

A: The big difference: Pintail decks are mounted on TOP of the trucks. They are great for cruising and carving and for most ride styles that keep you under 25 mph, while Drop Throughs have the trucks mounted through the deck. They are great for faster speed riding, downhill, and some long distance riding.

Q: What should I learn first on a longboard?

A: We must learn to walk before we can run, or in our case, push before we can dance. Begin with the basics and then move towards more advanced skills, such as downhill longboarding or tricks. Welcome to the first step in your quest to becoming a confident skater.

Q: How much should I spend on a beginner longboard?

A: Typically, a used longboard in good condition falls in the range of $350-450. On the other hand, the best longboards for beginners could start as low as five hundred dollars to a as high as a thousand dollars ($500-$1000).

Q: What makes a longboard expensive?

A: There are a few reasons that longboards are more expensive than skateboards. For one, longboards typically require more care and maintenance than skateboards. Longboards also require specialized parts and accessories that skateboards do not, such as longboard trucks and bearings.

Q: How to choose longboard length?

A: The size depends strongly on the program you have set for yourself. It will vary greatly if you want a Dancing board or a Freeride board. Your height can also be an important factor in choosing your longboard deck. For an adult person between 5'10" and 5'10", you can go for a versatile size from 36" to 41".

Q: What is the difference between freeride and freestyle boards?

A: Freestyle boards are more flexible (more forgiving on landings), shorter (easier to maneuver in the air) and slightly wider (increased stability overall). Freeride snowboards are very stiff (more stable at higher speeds), longer (faster) and slightly skinnier (more responsive).

Q: Is a freestyle board a park board?

A: However, park boards are specifically designed for the type of riding known as "freestyle. '' Every park board is a bit different, but in general, they're designed to help you get better at jumps, rails, boxes, and other jibs by being lightweight, poppy, and maneuverable.

Q: Can you hop curbs on a longboard?

A: When you're approaching the kerb, stop your longboard, hop off and step on the kerb. Of course, there are multiple ways you can do this. You can approach the kerb with a foot brake, pick up your board and step on. Alternatively, you can pop your tail, pick up your board with your front hand and hop on the kerb.
