Types of Dance Longboard

Cruiser Longboards
Cruising in the most popular type of longboarding, so there are endless options for cruiser longboards. Cruiser longboards are usually used for cruising around or for transportation. These are great longboards for riding to the store, a coffee shop, or to work. Cruiser longboards are not necessarily confined to one riding style, so they are great longboards for beginners who want to test out what they like best.

Carving Longboards
Carving longboards makes you feel like you are surfing or snowboarding. Carving longboards can be either top mount or drop through. They use wheel cutouts or wheel wells to avoid wheelbite. Most carving longboards have a shorter wheelbase in order to allow for responsive turns. Carvers can be extremely fun on a slight incline.

Pintail Longboards
A pintail longboard has a pointed nose and tail. Pintails have a wider nose and finer tail. The center of the board is wider, allowing for a place to stand without having wheelbite. Pintail longboards are great for carving and cruising.

Drop Through Longboards
A drop through longboard has its truck mounts mounted through the deck of the board. This lowers the board closer to the ground, which increases stability. For this reason, drop through longboards are great for downhill longboarding.

Downhill Longboards
Downhill longboards are used for riding at high speeds down hills. These boards are stable and fast. Most downhill longboards are drop through because this type of truck mount is most stable.

Freeride Longboards
Freeride longboards are usually very similar to downhill longboards. Because freeride longboarding is done at high speeds, the best decks tend to be drop through. The main difference between the two styles are that freerider perform tricks and slides.

Dance Longboard Features

Kick Tail Longboards

Kick tails are what you see on both ends of regular skateboards. They allow you to lift one end of the board off the ground to perform tricks or hop curbs, as well as make quick turns. Longboards can have kick tails on just one end (on directional boards) or on both ends (on symmetrical boards). Kick tail longboard shapes are great for cruiser boards for last-second pedestrian dodges and curb hops, and a necessity on many freestyle boards.

Longboard Wheel Cut-Outs / Wheel Wells

Both wheel cut-outs and wheel wells are all about preventing wheel bite on your longboard, which is what happens when you corner too hard and your wheels contact your deck. This usually results in you getting thrown off your board (no bueno). Cut-outs generally allow you to turn the hardest because there is no way for the wheels to make board contact. Wheel wells allow you to turn sharp but will still allow for contact if your trucks are too loose, you don't have large enough risers, or your wheels are too big.

Longboard Deck Concave

Grip tape keeps your feet on the board, but concave helps quite a bit, too. Concave essentially means that the edges or rails of the longboard deck are a little higher than the board's center. When standing on the board, your feet will contour to this shape, increasing the contact area of your shoe, which in turn means more grip. The amount of concave usually depends on the designated riding style of the board: Downhill and freeride boards generally have deeper, more extreme concave than cruisers.

W-Concave Longboards

Just like regular concave, W-concave keeps your feet planted on the board. It's actually like having two concave sections next to each other, which provides a lot of grip. This feature usually only comes on more expensive downhill and freeride boards.

The Difference Between Dance Longboard and Skateboards

Size

It's in the name. Longboards are both longer and wider than skateboards.Longboards typically range anywhere from 38 to 60 inches in length, while skateboards hover around 28 to 34 inches. In terms of width, longboards are normally 9 to 11 inches wide, with skateboards usually between 7 to 10 inches.

Wheels

If longboards are the big brother of skateboards in terms of size, it's safe to assume that the same thing applies to their wheels. It does! The longboard wheels are larger and softer, as are their reverse kingpin trucks (the part that keeps the wheels attached to the board). Soft wheels are meant to grip the road and absorb shock from any bumps or cracks you might roll over so that your ride is a smooth one.Skateboard wheels and trucks are much smaller and rougher. This makes it easier to do tricks and control yourself even at high speeds.

Shape

Longboards will look the most similar to surfboards-their curvatures closely resemble each other-but the longboard's shape can vary between a classic surfboard body that covers the wheels and a concave, cut out shape that exposes the wheels. The skateboard has some of the same features but is the smallest of the trio, with a curved nose and tail, and popsicle-shaped body.

How to Choose Dance Longboard

Longboard deck shape & size

When choosing a longboard, the shape and size of the deck play a crucial role in determining the overall riding experience. Different deck shapes are designed to cater to specific riding styles and preferences.Pintail longboards feature a tapered shape with a rounded nose and tail. This classic design provides stability and control, making it ideal for cruising and carving. The longer wheelbase and narrower width offer a smooth and predictable ride, allowing riders to maintain balance and maneuver with ease.Drop-through longboards have a cutout in the deck where the trucks are mounted. This lowers the center of gravity, enhancing stability and making them suitable for downhill riding. The dropped platform also provides a comfortable foot placement and improved control, making it easier to push and slide.

Longboard wheels - size and durometer

When selecting a longboard, the size and durometer (hardness) of the wheels are crucial factors to consider. The right wheel size and durometer can significantly impact your riding style and performance, as well as your ability to navigate different terrains. For riders seeking speed and stability, larger wheels are the way to go. They offer a larger contact patch with the ground, allowing for faster acceleration and maintaining momentum. Larger wheels also handle bumps and cracks on the road more effectively, providing a smoother ride and enhanced stability.Conversely, if maneuverability and quick turns are your priority, smaller wheels are a better choice. They offer increased agility and responsiveness, allowing you to navigate crowded spaces and tight corners with ease. Smaller wheels also have less rotational mass, making them easier to accelerate and decelerate.

The weight capacity

The weight capacity of a longboard is an important consideration to ensure both comfort and safety during your rides. Each longboard has a specified weight limit that indicates the maximum load it can handle effectively. It is crucial to check this weight capacity to ensure that the longboard can support your body weight comfortably.Choosing a longboard with a weight capacity that exceeds your own weight is advisable as it provides an extra margin of safety and ensures optimal performance. If the weight limit is exceeded, it may affect the board's stability, responsiveness, and overall durability. Riding a longboard that is not designed to support your weight can lead to decreased control, increased risk of accidents, and potential damage to the board.By selecting a longboard with an appropriate weight capacity, you can enjoy a smooth and stable riding experience. It ensures that the board remains responsive to your movements and maintains its structural integrity, allowing you to confidently explore various riding styles and techniques.

Process of Dance Longboard

Design Process
Longboards come in all sorts of shapes. Since the purpose of this board was just fun and non-intense transportation, I went with a cruiser-style shape. I was fortunate to have a friend who had a board similar to the one I had imagined, so I took a tracing of the contour and just modified it a little to get my final shape. The board ended up about 9" at the widest point and 37" long. With patience you can freehand the shape, but a model board is very helpful to get an idea of what you want.

The Form
I wanted the board to have a lifted tail and a subtle curve upwards on both long sides. The solution I came up with was to make a solid block with the negative curves cut out of it so that in a vacuum bag the blank (the unshaped board, or everything that is glued up together) could be pressed down onto the form and forced into shape. I glued up a couple pieces of MDF and used screws to clamp it together. I chose MDF for the form because it is easy to shape, flat, and cheap. After trimming up the block, I sketched out the shape and used my eyes and an angle gauge to decide what angles to trim off.

The Glue-up
The board is made up of three layers of 1/8 inch baltic birch plywood, with a layer of fiberglass in between each. From all my research, everything said to use baltic birch, so we ordered a sheet from our wood supply place. It cost $16 for a 5x5 sheet. I cut the three pieces of plywood bigger than their final dimensions, and tapered the ends on the chop saw so that the wood wouldn't have to bend over a compound angle. As for the fiberglass, Doc happened to have a roll of airplane-grade fiberglass from an earlier project, so I got that for free, part of the reason this project was so inexpensive. We cut the two pieces of fiberglass cloth to size.

Shaping the Blank
When the blank came off the form I traced the pattern for the shape of the board onto the underside of the blank. I did this by cutting along half of my original paper pattern and tracing that onto one side of the board. I flipped it, and traced the other half to create a symmetrical shape. I cut this out with a jigsaw. There is really no better way to cut it out. Then I moved to the handheld belt sander to smooth out the curve. A normal sander would work, but optimize for the belt. Whenever you are cutting or sanding fiberglass a respirator is very important. After getting the curve smooth, I routed a small round-over on the edges (not totally necessary) and went over the whole thing with 150 grit on the orbital sander.

Painting the Design
Again, the design was one of my favorite elements of the board. I planned to spray paint it in a mixture of red and black, to compliment the color of the wheels I had. This meant I had to mask off the design in tape. I covered the whole underside with masking tape and attached my pattern to the tape with some spray adhesive and more tape. Then I meticulously cut out the whole design through the paper and tape with a straight edge and a razor blade. When the right sections of tape had been removed, I moved to spraying. I laid on a coat of red and added black splotches and flecks until I liked it.

Finishing the Underside
After the spray paint dried, my plan was to wipe on stain around the lines, but Doc convinced me to spray the stain instead, since he was worried that the wiping motion and the alcohol in the stain would mess with the paint job. Him being a chemist, I believed him. We usually spray using gravity flow spray guns hooked up to the air compressor. If you choose to wipe the stain, just be careful. Since the stain was sprayed the grain doesn't pop quite as much, but I can live with it.

How to Maintain Dance Longboard

Regular Inspection of Your Longboard
The first step in maintaining your longboard is performing regular checks. Look for any visible damage, cracks, or worn-out parts that might need replacement. Pay particular attention to your deck, trucks, wheels, and bearings. These are the areas that take on the most wear and tear and are crucial to your longboard's performance.

Cleaning the Longboard Deck
The deck of your longboard can gather dust and dirt from your rides, which can, over time, affect your grip tape's effectiveness. Cleaning your deck is an easy task that you can do with a soft-bristled brush or a special grip tape cleaner.

Cleaning and Lubricating the Bearings

Bearings are an essential component of your longboard. They enable the wheels to spin freely, providing a smooth and effortless ride. Over time, dirt and grime can get inside your bearings and hinder their performance. Regular cleaning and lubricating can ensure that they remain in top condition.

Checking and Tightening the Trucks

The trucks on your longboard should be tight enough to prevent wobbling but loose enough to allow easy turning. Over time, the nuts on your trucks can loosen. It's important to check the tightness of your trucks regularly and adjust as necessary.

Inspecting and Replacing the Wheels

Finally, keep a close eye on your wheels. Any significant wear or tear, flat spots, or chunks missing from your wheels can drastically affect your longboard's performance. If you find any issues, it's time to replace your wheels. You can find a wide variety of longboard wheels on our brands page.

FAQ

Q: How often should I clean my longboard bearings?

A: Cleaning frequency can depend on how often and where you ride, but as a general rule, every 2-3 months is a good starting point. If you ride in dirty or wet conditions, you may need to clean them more frequently.

Q: Can I use WD-40 on my longboard bearings?

A: We don't recommend using WD-40 as a lubricant for your longboard bearings. While it can help clean the bearings, it's not a suitable long-term lubricant and can attract more dust and grime.

Q: How tight should my longboard trucks be?

A: Truck tightness can significantly affect your riding experience. If your trucks are too tight, it can make turning difficult. Conversely, if they're too loose, it can make the board unstable. It's all about finding the perfect balance that suits your riding style.

Q: How do I know when to replace my longboard wheels?

A: If your wheels have visible flat spots, are worn unevenly, or have chunks missing, it's time to replace them. These signs of wear can affect your board's performance and your safety.

Q: What's the best way to store my longboard when not in use?
